Locks
Locks are theft deterents. In other words, they lower the possiblity your bike will be stolen.
Lock Facts
The best way to avoid becoming a bike theft victim is to bring it inside the building rather than using a bike rack!
- Most bikes that are stolen were unlocked.
- Amsterdam rule of thumb: your lock should be worth 3 times as much as your bike.
- Never leave a bike outside overnight, especially in a noticeable pattern or place.
Types
Cable
Most cable locks can be cut with a standard park tool cable cutters.
U-Lock
Probably the best solution. Small u-locks cost $20 to 30+ from a distributor at wholesale and $40 to 60+ at retail.
Chain
- Bulky chains that are a PITA to get on and off the bike seem to get used for long term parking, and not at all for quick stops.
- Coverings on the chain made out of canvas or rubber tubing not only protect the bike paint but also add another level of theft deterent.
Combination vs. Keys
One isn't better than the other, they both have pros and cons.
- Kids lose keys
- All cylindrical key locks can be thwarted with the right size plastic tube (bic pens are just one size).
- Combinations are easy to crack (Example 1, Example 2).
