In the hope that Community Bike Shops will share knowledge via the Bike Collectives Wiki, this page provides examples of basic wiki editing and links to websites with additional information.

Basic text formatting
*From WikiText Examples
You can format the page using Wikitext special characters.

{|width="80%" border="1" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"
!What you type
You can italicize text by putting 2
apostrophes on each side.

3 apostrophes will bold the text.

5 apostrophes will bold and italicize
the text.

(Using 4 apostrophes doesn't do anything special -- <br>they are just left over ones that are included as part of the text.)
A single newline
generally has no effect on the layout.
These can be used to separate
sentences within a paragraph.
Some editors find that this aids editing
and improves the diff function
(used internally to compare
different versions of a page).

But an empty line
starts a new paragraph.

When used in a list, a newline does affect the layout (see below).

Splaff Flopps started in a garage with a tire, a bike tube, and a shoe knife. The vision was to make a comfortable, long lasting, fairly priced sandal from all recycled materials. Today Splaff products include sandals, handbags, belts, mirrors, and a coffee table.

They are all made with recycled race car tires and bicycle Inner tubes, regupol (a cushioning material made from used tires which have been chipped and pressed into mats), and hemp. They are hand-crafted and are produced in a 100% waste free, earth friendly process in which all left over materials are either re-used or recycled.

Bwindle83: /* Rubber */

Generally speaking recycling is one of the key voluntary or involuntary goals of collectives and cooperatives -- as the re-use keeps bikes out of land fills.

Metal
Most metal found on a donated bike is going to be steel or aluminum. While you can use your eyes to tell the difference, a magnet makes no mistakes.

* Steel - This isn't always worth your time or storage, so take advantage of people that collect metal and recycle it for a living.
* Aluminum - This can be worth your time, consider bringing it to your local metal recycling facility.

Rubber
* Tires: While it is usually free to recycle tires, it will cost volunteer/staff time and transporation to do it.
# Look in the phonebook under tire recycling.
# Ask your local car tire shop where they take their used tires -- by law they have to recycle them.
# Bring them to your local shred yard.
* Tubes: Have a few uses:
# Volunteer busy-work patching tubes.
# When sliced into sections they make industrial rubber-bands. Which are good for folding newly patched tubes.
# Attach and tie things down.
# Recycle at shred yards.
# Cut them in half long-ways and use for wrapping handlebars.
# Bring a chair back to life.
# Send them to Splaff, Inc.

Chains and Freewheels
Resource Revival actually has a program set up where you can ship them your used chains and freewheels at no cost to you. They in recycle your junk into art and sell it.

Shop Rags
Most collectives and cooperatives use them until they are so dirty they can't even be used to clean a chain. At which point you should bring them to your local hazardous waste facility just like old paint, oil, gasoline, etc.,...

The thought behind it is that the energy and detergent used by washing
rags is worse than putting some reused cloth and possibly biodegradable
grease into a landfill.

There are "rag services" that automotive shops use, where they collect the dirty ones, the service comes by and picks them up and drops off clean ones. This can be an expensive thing, and since there isn't alot of money in it for the service it is hard to get donated.

Used Part Cleaner Liquids
No matter how biodegradeable the liquid you wash your parts is, when you mix it with a petroleum based product like grease -- it becomes a hazardous material. As a result, used parts cleaner liquids must be treated as a hazardous material and brought to your local recycling facility.

What exactly is this Training Manual?
The lesson plans in this manual are designed as technical aids to guide the teaching of adults and older teens who are being trained to become volunteer Earn-A-Bike instructors. The lesson plans cover a wide variety of subjects from riding a bike safely in the city to how to true wheels. In the course of teaching this content, each lesson also demonstrates the teaching methodology we use with young people in Earn-A-Bike.

Why Did Bikes Not Bombs Develop this Manual?
Bikes Not Bombs (BNB) began teaching Earn-A-Bike classes in school parking lots and playgrounds around the Boston area in 1990.

Towing a set of tools around the city in a bike trailer, we were able to reach many youths in their own environments. However, as we soon discovered, it was difficult to maintain consistent relationships with young people without a youth center. In 1994 we moved into 59 Amory St. in Roxbury, Massachusetts and ran our first in-house Earn-A-Bike program in the new Bikes Not Bombs World Headquarters.

Now that we had established a home base, we had a place to teach our classes as well as a place where volunteers could come and receive training. As the number of students taking Earn-A-Bike grew, so did our need for trained volunteer instructors. We found that in order to teach mechanics and bike riding to the high standards our students deserved, we needed a student:instructor ratio of no more than 3:1, and we developed the Bikes Not Bombs Instructor Training course offered here at BNB once a year.

The class lasts for ten weeks and is designed to train anyone, no matter what the mechanical skill, how to be a helpful aid in an Earn-A-Bike class. Finally we needed a manual to go along with this class that would teach mechanics as well as our teaching methodology. Besides wanting a manual as a companion to our classes, we also wanted to give bicycle activists from around the world a chance to create Earn-A-Bike classes of their own. That's why we created this manual.

What can I use these manuals for?
If you are currently a member of the Bikes Not Bombs Instructor Training course, you can down load these manuals, print them out, and study them or bring them to class with you. Though we cover all the subjects in the manual in the class, it's always good to have the information in written form for your reference, and to personalize it with your own notes from class. Once you begin to teach, keep these pages handy as a check list for covering all the steps in a process.

The lesson plans are designed to walk a person through the necessary parts of an entire Earn-A-Bike class and through each step in the mechanical processes we are teaching. If you already have an Earn-A-Bike class set up, you can use these manuals as a technical reference. If you are looking to establish a program similar to the one we have created here at Bikes Not Bombs, you can use these manuals as a guide to creating your own Earn-A-Bike class. Teaching a batch of volunteer instructors can be a great warm-up exercise for teaching young people!

Remember, this is a free manual to anyone who wants it. Download it, put it to use, and create more bicycle culture around the world.

Good Luck!!

P.S. If you do reproduce all or part of this manual, we ask that you acknowledge BNB. We'd also love to know how any of you are using it. Thanks!

Mission Statement
Lasting peace and social justice require equitable and sustainable use of resources. BNB provides community-based education and assists development projects with recycled bicycles, related technologies and technical assistance, as concrete alternatives to the militarism, over-consumption & inequality that breed war and environmental destruction. Our organization is part of a worldwide movement for peace and responsible stewardship of the earth.

About
We receive approximately 3,000 used bicycles and tons of used parts each year. We ship about 2,400 of these bikes to economic development projects (micro-enterprise bike businesses, sustainable technology projects, and youth training programs) in South Africa, Ghana, and Guatemala every year. BNB also sends technicians and tools for start-up projects to these same countries. (In the past we have worked in Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and El Salvador, and we continue to accept new requests for assistance from projects in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa.) We use the remainder of our collected bikes at our Roxbury Center; some are used in our co-ed youth Earn-A-Bike programs, and others are repaired by teenage mechanics as part of our Vocational Training programs and are for sale in our bike shop. BNB also offers girls-only programs all year round.

We operate a full-service bike shop, staffed by local teen graduates of BNB training programs and supervised by 2 professional adult bike mechanics. The shop repairs customer bikes, offers hard-to-find used parts and sells new parts, locks, accessories and refurbished bikes with a warranty. Shop specialties include renovated upright-bar 12 speeds, single-speed coasting and fixed-gear bikes, reconditioned mountain and hybrid models of all brands, and higher-end touring and road bikes. We sell frames alone, including used Titanium Merlin frames.

In addition to training young people to become bicycle mechanics and community leaders, we have many ways in which adults can get involved. Adult volunteers help teach youth in the Earn-A-Bike program, after taking our training course. We also teach adult mechanics classes, organize seasonal rides, and are always in need of volunteer help on Wednesday nights and at other times. For more info, call us or send an email!

Wrapping Handlebars With Old Inner Tubes
The Urban Bike Project of Wilmington recycles old inner tubes for cheap (free) handlebar wrap. There are only a few steps involved.

1. Cut the valve off an old inner tube. One tube should be enough for one set of handlebars.<BR>
2. Use scissors or a razer blade to split it long ways down the middle (it doesn't have to be perfect).<BR>
3. Wash the pieces to avoid getting black stuff or talc all over when you ride. Let dry.<BR>
4. Follow normal handlebar wrapping procedures and secure with tape.<BR>

The wrap should last a year or so depending on use and weather conditions.
A good way to recycle old inner tubes. Weave them back and forth and tie off on each end to create a comfy seat for a broken chair. Some of the tubes will split eventually (see picture) but these will be easy to replace.
