== History ==

The BikeAthens BRP began in 2001 as a small group of friends in a garage, fixing bikes for the homeless in Athens. Years later, after occupying a storage unit, then an unconditioned warehouse space, we now have a 900 square-foot heated and cooled shop with a bathroom as well as a 2000 square-foot storage area. Thousands of volunteers have passed through the shop, most of whom started as novices and left with at least a few bike repair skills. In 2008 we added a third weekly 2.5 hour work session, and in 2012 we added a women-only work session.

==History==
The Bike Recycling Program was started in 2000 by Bike Athens [http://www.bikeathens.com/]. Bike Athens promotes biking, walking and public transportation in the Athens-Clark County Area. The organization works to put in bike routes and bike lanes in the city and promote cycling and they have certainly succeeded. Buses are equipped with bike racks, there are a multitude of places to lock up bicycles throughout downtown Athens and cycling appears to be really popular among locals as well as the University of Georgia community. The Bike Recycling Program gives more people access to sustainable transportation. The Bike Recycling Program, which is located just north of downtown Athens, is run by a couple of committed volunteers and a team of behind the scenes people at Bike Athens. The program was originally established to fix up and re-distribute bikes to the poor community in the area. Around Christmas time the organization gives away more than three hundred bikes to children.
