Things are getting updated, we are in the process of switching away from DreamHost, bikebike.org is registered until 2028 and bikecollectives.org is registered until 2032. Domain registration for bikecollectives.org
The Utah Bicycle Collective paid registration fees for many years as the legacy "owner" of this collectively-owned website. However, they no longer have strong ties to the community, to the extent that they completely broke the website in late 2021 (pointed the domain to a different host) because they thought nobody was using it! We rescued it! But now we are responsible for paying our own domain registration fees for bikecollectives.org. $85.76 will keep us going for the next 8 years.

We need to switch away from shared hosting to a high-availability VPS for bikecollectives.org.
REASONS: Bikecollectives.org is where we keep the wiki and all its resources and the ThinkTank mailing list. We need it to work so that people can use it.
DreamHost isn't providing enough server resources for the wiki to run well.
The wiki is so slow it times out a lot
This means people aren't able to make edits
To make the wiki speed up, we had to remove the visual editor.
The visual editor is easy to use.
Nobody wants to use the source editor but you and me.
Our uptime is low. This means the website is down a lot.
They have us stuck on a dated version of MailMan for the ThinkTank that is no longer supported by the developers.
They won't let us update MailMan to the supported up-to-date version.
Bikebike.org is already hosted on a VPS (Godwin directly pays for this each year all by himself).
It creates extra work for our extremely limited tech volunteers to be having two separate hosting platforms.
Right now Godwin is paying $80-$120 per year just for hosting for bikecollectives.org (he is also paying for bikebike.org hosting and registration) and we think he shouldn't have to shoulder all these costs alone anymore.
COST:
We will hold off on getting a VPS until we have at least a 2-year budget for it. That way we can always be a year ahead and we won't be trading a technical problem for a fundraising problem. All numbers are in US dollars but I think you can donate in a variety of currencies. Here is the range of options:
On the low end, this will cost about $150 per year for a KVM. We think this is what Godwin is using, and it works fine for BikeShopi (what Jonathan uses) as well. This is probably the budget option. More like $720 per year if we want a safe bet like Linode. This is the "set it and forget it" option. If we can get $20-$60 in recurring monthly donations, that would also cover this cost.
Our beloved tech volunteers are doing things like having emergency midnight meetings to put out fires and keep our infrastructure working for the community. There are two sleepy humans answering technical questions for this donation request. Please donate.
