Daniela: this is Daniela, and I'm calling in from Mexico City. I'm really excited to be here, it's me, Daniela, Dandy, and Valeria from Resiste Pedál. We've been excited for this since 2018. I'm going to be following the format that's been shared to introduce our collective. We're a collective that has been using the bike as a tool for resistance against the city planning of mostly highways and roads. Through workshops and meetings we have created a mass of people who have joined together in our resistance in the peripherieis and in the city. I'm going to go through a brief chronology of the things we've been going through over the past few years. In 2018 we started out with the release of a zine called travelling through the city and we presented at bike!bike! 2018 in Tijuana. And we've been incentivising and promoting bike riding through different rides and events, in other cities as well. We faced a major in breakdown the organizating capacity of our collective following the murder of our founder Carolina Espinoza. https://www.ojala.mx/en/ojala-en/memory-and-movement-in-mexico-city Authorities have done nothing about it. Since then we have had a bunch of actions. From those actions has come the 1st of August Movement. Aside from comemmorating her death we have also created a lab for women and queer people to have strategic tools for bike riding and bike collectives. And the main part of those workshops has been about how to protect our bodies as women and queer folk cycling. In 2022 and 2023 we started bike races for women and queer folk. Due to the fact there isn't recognition of us as people in the larger bike community. In 2023 we started activities and lobbying for recognition of the work of bike messengers and other delivery folk. And we also hosted and held workshops for bike messengers and other people who are working for delivery platforms. Throughout these years we've been working in different spaces and events through actions on the ground and protests.
As hosts, we would also be joined by a large number of Collectives: Rabia Callejera, Foro Mundial de la Bici, Espora, Bike Polo, Somos Bicis, and XicoPedalea. Right now Valeria will continue to present.
Valeria: Why do we want to host the next bike!bike! in 2025? The first and most important reason is that hosting in Mexico City would allow more people from the Global South to attend, in particular from Mexico where it would be cheaper. Political and visa restrictions prevent people from the Global South to travel to the USA and Canada. The second reason is that we are pushing for a a diversification and decentralization of bike!bike! to include more of the globe. We would also like bike!bike! to focus more on community and not just institutions. We are also emphasizing the point of inclusivity and diversity in particular gender, class, and race. We propose to host bike!bike! next August 2025. Why do we think we are ready for this? This is not the first gathering we have hosted. We have a clear vision of what it would look like. Now Dandy will answer the next question.
Daniela: the next question is: why is it important for people to travel to your city and to host it in general? We think that there are new collectives have emerged in Mexico City and as the bike has become more in use over the past few years, and so the problems cyclists experience are more present than ever. There have been a lot of traffic and cyclist deaths over the past few years. There is a policy preference for car users. We see this as an opportunity for dialogue, a different type of dialogue - instead of directed at instutitions (because there hasn't been much response from them) but rather a community-based dialogue. So we propose that the opening of the event promote community dialogue. To address why it is important to be held in our city, for our local movement; the previous answers have spoken as to why it is important. Over the past few years the bike!bike! gathering has had a political sense and purpose, and at this time we propose three themes for the gathering: defense of water, white bikes, and the genocide in Palestine. And we would be using free and open software because we believe that it's politically aligned with our objectives. We would not use the main private social networks. So we are here to answer any questions; this is the moment for it, if anyone has any questions please feel free to direct them to us. I would like to thank everybody for this space to put Mexico City up for consideration and to be a part of this discussion. I would also like to apologize for everything that happened in the past [notetaker's interpretation: I believe the apology refers to communication issues, eg, not knowing if bike!bike! in person would be back following its pandemic hiatus]
Josh: thank you for the lovely presentation and to everyone else for being here and being patient through the technical difficulties. The next session is clarifying questions. So Josh Paulson asked what month bike!bike! will be in; I can answer that: August [2025]. So for this section, you can put your questions in the chat or raise your hand and I will put you on stack.
Benny: which shop specifically will be taking the lead on hosting bike!bike! ? How many other organizations will be supporting.
Valeria: there will be three groups in Mexico City. There are eight collectives such as the World Bike Forum, Pedales Libres in Chiaps (sp?); there will be a callout for more groups to participate and that will be welcome. I'll just answer the question in chat from Miguel. There is a place in San Gregorio where we would like to host events.
Alejandro: My first question is: as someone not from Mexico City who has participated in the Forum Mundial Bicicleta; I would have liked to see Resiste Pedál at the world bike forum. Capacities are different across different groups. That's not too problematic if people dedicate themselves 100% to do the event.
- Reformulating the question: from someone who has done events, how do we know that folks organizing the event have organizing skills and will put forth all of their effort
Josh: that's an interesting discussion point but not specifically a clarifying question
Daniela: Send us a message and we will discuss in more depth. Regarding where these events will be held: autonomous places, for example an occupied library in a neighbourhood in San Gregorio would be one of the main spaces
Valeria: of course we're going to collaborate with other collectives and ask for support; it's necessary to pool our resources. We did participate in the world bicycle forum and gave a talk; not a lot of people came. We don't want to participate in that event any more as it's organizaed by governmental instutitions - it has some good aspects, but we'd like to focus bike!bike! on the community.
Josh: generally at bike!bike! the organizers provide housing, bikes, and most of the food for the participants - around 300 people. I just want to say that the answer doesn't have to be "yes" - whatever the answer is it will be helpful for us to think about.
Val: We have a network of people that could host people. We could lean on the bicycle forum and ping them to help house so many people. We have a large network of friends and friends of friends, including those with bars and restaurants, who could help house and feed participants. These networks have helped us over the years to host a lot of things. We have friends who can help arrange a lot of bikes as well.
Angie: How would you recover costs?
Valeria: we have funds from Tijuana although it's not enough. We have experience putting on parties to raise funds. So we've put on events previously to help raise money.
Daniela: I'd like address Alejandro's question about distances, which was: "distances in CDMX are huge, how do you account for distance between sites?" We would organize events so that they wouldn't be too far apart in the city. We've made a mini map of where the events would be in the city and would provide it to people so they wouldn't get lost including points of reference and places we think people should know about. Events wouldn't be hosted all over the city, it'd be mostly in one area.
Daniela: to address Josh's question: "I know that you talked about your activist group, and the relationship you have with other activist groups. I'm wondering, is there a community bike shop in Mexico City that's part of your network? So far, every BIKEBIKE has had a bike coop at its heart. Is there one for you?" Yes, there is, among the group of organizing entities. There are multiple bike co-ops in the network.
Josh: if there are any more questions, ask them now!
Daniela: we are confident we can put on an event at this scale
Josh: we have had a pitch, and some questions; do we have another pitch for Bogotá?
Armando: Sí. Yes, yes we do.
Armando: Hi everyone, we are about to celebrate 50 years of Ciclovia in Bogotá, which is about to happen this Sunday, December 15th, that's why I'm the only one from my group here. Now I'll share my Screen.
Embassy of bike-ka-king (?) Activemobiliy, this is the umbrella under which we are promoting tourism through bikes. our processes have been business oriented through industry. "Tribu" (showing bikes on screen) This has been our entry point in the bike industry- through tourism and bike trekking as a way to inspire + empower cyclists about their city.
We have been spearheading our project throughout the Columbian nation. One of our entreprises has been focused on bike security. This is part of our activism. We have projects in bike activism with youth called "Esconia Changing lives" Our project involves a bike repair shop as well 130 parking bike stalls for children in the Santa Fe neighbourhood whose parents are social workers. We have canvased community, and helped paint and build bikes for children in the neighbourhood. The second phase involves going to the seven homes that will shelter 1300. We also collaborate with the Chamber of Commerce of Bogota + Gov't of Cundina Marca. Event with 5000 cyclists participating. (images of cycling events shared on screen). Also includes delivery of 500 meals or pantry items for families in need. We have also partnered with other cities to promote athletic events (7,000 athletes) in Cundina Marca. (images shared on screen)This is to give you a sense of how we would manage our funds, or what it would look like to host an event. And we are also part of the coordinating committee of 50 year of Cyclovia events. Event including workshops, forums and cycling events. EMBYMAC- Active Mobility and Cycling Embassy works with Bike Messenger communities, Cyclovia, among many others.
Why do we want to host? We have had a lot of bike activism for many years. There was a pause pre-pandemic from a gender based violence accusation which involved an individual. Since then we have been on a healing process. We have a solid base now that is built on equity and equality for people who want to enjoy the bike. EMBYMAC team has been trained in feminist issues and gender related issues. For these reasons we think it is a key time for us to host B!B!
We propose it be held the bike week, usually the last week of september. In 2025 it's September 20-25.
Why do we want poeople to visit Bogota? we are a sponge city, we want to open up our processes, our way of life to inspire them, we are learning about social processes, to bring more knowledge to Bogota. Just to share with you right here, we have some examples of the half marathon that was held in Sikida (shared images on screen) to show that we have capacity to host.
Thank you very much everyone.
Questions!
Benny: What would housing/hosting look like?
Answer: We have a large community over 13 years of activism. Capacity to have a large couch surfing call out, along with hostels to host the estimated 300 people.
(unknown name): What are you plans to include women and LGBTQIA participants and organizers given what you mentioned has happened in the past?
Answer: It was a sexual harassment claim (audio cuts out) .. and in terms of our proposal working with a women and transgender network (audio cuts out) activism with (audio cuts out) with one of them, a friendship was healed.
(unknown): Aside from the bike donations and the food donations, what are you prosals for generating a dialogue (bike dialogue) with in the community? What other topics would you be touching on aside from bike-tourism and biking through childhood?
Answer: Our key focus has been to get kids biking to transform their lives. Another focus we have is to create an environment of empowerment through bikes, specifically through bike kitchen to get more poeple out on their bikes, being able to repair their bikes.
Armando: (some notes missed due to wrong Slido setting)... Bogota is a really cheap city to visit, it would be an honour for us for you to visit us.
No more questions!
Conversation/Discussion
Dandy: What is the travel equity plan/commission?
Armando: we already work with airlines, we could work with them to find good prices. Columbia is cheaper than Mexico.
Alejandro: Bogota - B!B! is a do it yourself thing, cooperative, entrepreneurial,
Bikes a Pueblo: The presentation of Bogota seems like a business doing charity work, and we want to distinguish ourselves, we want to bring a focus to gender based issues in that part of the city (city area missed by note taker). The assessment that we are all over the place in our proposal: we do not feel that way. We feel that Palestine is worth mentioning and water issues because water issues have been a trouble in Mexico city for 20 years and it's reaching a peak point.
Samuel: We have been in this fight for the past 19 years in the north of mexico. we also beleive the bike movement has been quite centralized in the bike forum space. We also celebrate the women's desire to take the lead on this, on hosting the event. We perhaps are not experts on gender and equity topics. We work in economies of solidarity, bike related solidarities of economy- (difficulties expressing/interpreting) bike swap meets, basically. Circular economy. They embrace their efforts and where they are coming from. Sending hugs.
Benny: I wanted to address first that we are spread out, I beleive it's not an issue.
There are always lots of topics that come up at bike!bike! I agree with Mexico City, that they want to have a more decentralized b!b!, more diverse. I do have a lot of reservations when it came to Columbia's presentation because it felt quite corporate. it felt very business-y, which is very not b!b! If we look at the past decade of b!b! (5) 2 in Mexico (Tijuana, Guadalajara), 2 in US Los Angeles +?, 1 in Winnipeg. I like the idea of one in South America. I like the idea of taking B!b! further south. It would make it more available to them, which is worth considering.
Armando: In terms of our processes : we always work in solidarity and automomy, this includes working with those with funding. our pillars have been empathy and compassion. Our idea for pantry items came up from participants themselves. We have always beleived in having or accepting an accepting hand. not so much to be businessy, but to .. to enable holding all of these events. If Bogota is chosen as a host city, we would committ to B!B!'s ideaology to solidary, community work. thank you.
Val: thinking how a bike business/enterprise could propose itself as an organizer for this event, as b!b! community comes out of CBS from bike repair, not producing more bikes but repairing existing bikes.
Armando: we started out as working as a bike repair shop, since then they have moved on to bike tourism and event management. We continue to build bikes that are affordable which are accessible. We build 20 of these bikes a year that are affordable.
Josh: Some people have hesitation about seeing a corporate looking presentation. That it isn't 'punk' enough. I don't know what resistance looks like in other places and I don't want to judge how they do it elsewhere. Also- One of the concerns I have when I think about b!b! next year, there's a format that I understand and expect. That is a schedule of workshops every day. I am worried that the people are proposing to host will not honour that structure. I have that fear that the conference will not be that conference in the same way. I would hope that the organizers are interested in keeping that format, in working with people who have been to/helped organize past b!b! to help. I recognize that things evolve and change.
Camille: if not 2025, is a different year an option for each city to host?
Armando: Right now, they have the support and time this month to organize due to the timing of the gathering of the pro-bike movement. hosting a different year isn't off the table, but it would require a discussion with the group.
Alejandro: can we chose hosts for 2025 and 2026?
Group: No.
Josh: Reservations- now is the time to say them.
Val: (in response to Alejandro) we have the money, yes, we are ready to go.
Tomi: I don't understand what Alejandro said.
David: the pitch given by Arnando was fantastic. My reservation is about the capacity of this small group of people to make a change in decision that was made at the last in person bike!bike! for Mexico City to host. I understand the purpose of this meeting is to decide where/who is hosting, it feels hard to me to change the decision that was made by a larger group.
Josh askes if folks are feeling ready to vote by using the thumbs up symbol in the chat.
It's more a temperature check than a vote, to help the group move forward.
A poll is created and added to the meeting. Chose 1 option: CDMX or Bogota.
CDMX: 16
Bogota: 5
Let's ask the group (esp. those who voted for Bogota) to tell the group their reservations about the city they didn't vote for.
Benny: I hate online meetings.
Alejandro:
(?who is talking?) I didn't vote for Bogota, but the presentation was awesome. Who is going to be hosting CDMX physically?
Others: this was dicusses previously. Link to notes provided in chat.
New voting poll created. "A more real vote"
CDMX 14 (wasn't it 19?)
Bogota 2
Josh: Check in with Arnando, Val and Dandy. Let's do it.
Arnando: thank you for the opportunity and congratulations to CDMX. We look forward to make B!b! happen in Bogota in 2026.
Val: (no translation available, note taker is winging it from spanish) thank you for everything. We are emotional. we will keep in touch with the group because we will need your help. There are a lot of problems right now with (?)
Josh: We will see each other in Mexico city in August!
Daniela

Daniela
Tmbn usar redes sociales y software abierta y gratis y libre. no usar servicios pagados
Estamos aqui para responder a preguntas.
Estamos muy felices de volver a este discurso de BB2025 en CDMX. Y pido discuplas de lo anterior, lo que ya hablamos.
