Freewheelin’ will annually host annual Fall and Spring B.R.A.K.E.S day camp programs for youth ages 8-18. The program dates offered will follow the Indianapolis Public Schools calendar.
During BRAKES, campers will participate in various enrichment activities such as team building, enrichment activities, guest speakers, arts & crafts, games, and more. Campers will also participate in bike safety and bike rides.

Youth Mechanic Education

Green Apron Program

Green Apron (Earn-a-Bike) is an introduction to Freewheelin’, bicycle maintenance, riding safety, and a culture of growth. Youth aged 10-18 learn-and-earn in this hands-on, entry-level course.

Bicycle Mechanics Classes

At Freewheelin’, apron colors are used in the same way as in karate belts: to mark a student’s level of mastery. Each apron color (Green, Red, Purple and Black Apron) indicates a specific level of mastery over particular skills and principles. Kids build their confidence with each new apron and can mentor other youths to build their skills.

Bike Lab

Formerly known as Open Shop, our Bike Lab is the place for learners to continue what they started in the Green Apron Program. Much like science labs in school, this is where our young mechanics explore, learn, and practice beyond the classroom. Bike Lab is all about maintaining and growing depth in bicycle skills and knowledge — as well as our relationships with one another.
While the shop is still open to the youth of the neighborhood during bike lab to keep their bikes rolling, this time is mainly meant for those in our classes to hone their skills. Our youth are always happy to help someone fix a flat to keep others riding.

Youth Education And Employment Training (YEET) Program

Youth between the ages of 14 and 18 can apply to work at Freewheelin’ Community Bikes through our paid Youth Education and Employment Training (YEET) Program.
For most youth, it’s a first job that helps them prepare for a successful future while providing vital services to our Freewheelin’ participants and customers.

Mobile Bike Hub

Schedule a visit from the Freewheelin' Mobile Bike Education Hub and let the learning come to you! Whether it's for your program or a special event, the Mobile Bike Hub delivers Freewheelin’s hands-on programming right to your location.
Just like a science lab, the hub is a space for exploration, learning, and practice—focused on deepening bike skills, mechanical knowledge, and the relationships that grow through shared work and curiosity.

Bicycle Academy

Bicycle Academy empowers adults ages 18 and up through hands-on learning, career development, and community support. Our programs offer comprehensive training in bicycle mechanics, bike safety education, and pathways to employment in the bicycle industry.
Participants also build essential soft skills and receive individualized support services, helping them grow both personally and professionally.

Community Ride

Come join us in our beginning-level, family-friendly, no-drop bike rides on third Saturdays of the month at 10:00 am throughout the summer (see the Events Calendar).
We meet at the Freewheelin’ parking lot (3355 Central Ave). Bike guides will plan out and lead safe rides for cyclists of all ages and levels to enjoy.
