Wheel sizer
A wheel sizer is a tool to quickly find the size of a wheel that doesn't have a tire on it. The wheel is placed in the sizer, and the axle hits a line labeled with the size.
Construction
Materials
- Plywood 30 inches wide and 36 inches tall
- (2) "2x6" (actual 1.5 inch by 5.5 inch) boards 30 inches long
- Screws
Building the wheel sizer
- Cut the 3 pieces of wood to size
- Screw on the 2x6s from the back. The inside gap is 25.25 inches at the top and 14.25 inches at the bottom. The 2x6s start about 2 inches above the bottom of the back board.
- Using wheels of known size, drop them in and check where the axle lands. Draw on lines and label them as shown in the pictures.
Tips
- Try to use 2x6s instead of 2x4s because wheels with longer axels are too thick for 2x4s
- The type and thickness of plywood isn't important, but a smooth-ish surface and painting it a light color will help to see which line the axle lands on
- The dimensions given will allow you to measure 18" to 27" wheels (including 29" wheels, which are actually smaller than 27" wheels)
- The angle of the two boards, determined by the top and bottom distance between them, is fairly important. Small changes will affect how far apart the lines are or whether certain wheel sizes fit.
