For the last three years (so, since/started in 2015) ReCycle Bikes program has been run where bikes donated from the community are fixed up and given away. Bikes are stored/fixed at the ski lodge at Laurentian Ski Hill during the summer off-season.

A volunteer-driven bicycle donation program:

New in 2018, we are excited to work with the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority who is providing space for our volunteer bike mechanics to tune up bicycles that have been donated as part of the program. The new partnership will allow for an expansion of the program to include collection of bicycles throughout the Spring and Summer as well as the ability to collect and refurbish adult bikes.

North Bay YMCA is supporting the program once again this year as the drop-off location for donated bicycles at 186 Chippewa Street West. In exchange for each bicycle donated that is in good repair, a $25 charitable tax receipt will be issued by Discovery Routes Trails Organization. Unfortunately, donation receipts cannot be issued for bikes that are beyond repair. Although our volunteer bike mechanics are very skilled, bikes that are extremely rusty or broken are too costly and time consuming to repair and cannot be salvaged. Please contact us if you have any questions about a bicycle’s and condition and if it would be considered fit for donation.

Once bikes are tuned-up, Discovery Routes works with a variety of local agencies to identify people in the community that need a bicycle. We are always looking for volunteers to help tune-up donated bikes. Contact Discovery Routes if you are interested. Since 2015, Discovery Routes and community volunteers have refurbished over 60 children’s bicycles. Our aim for 2018 will be to double that amount!
