Q&A

Question - Can we have "speed dating" styled rooms, that would make random break-out rooms for people to have more intimate conversations (3-4 people)?

Answer - That is a great idea, we all love it. Someday! When we're paying interpreters enough that we can have simultaneous interpretation in those smaller rooms as needed.

Question - Why are you using Zoom instead of Jitsi?

Answer - During planning meetings, the group unanimously agreed that we should try to continue with Bike!Bike!'s tradition of language justice. Here are the resources we used to learn about language justice. The organization where these resources came from developed in the context of the US/Mexico border region. It will be interesting to learn how language justice can work in a more global context.

We also agreed to prioritize closed captioning for accessibility.

Having simultaneous interpretation and captioning and a server that could handle large numbers of people was too much of a technical challenge for the volunteer capacity we had available.

Jitsi technology is not there yet. We have emailed to inquire and there are significant technical limitations that mean Jitsi/May First will not be able to meet the needs of B!B!E! any time soon.

Question - What about Discord?

Answer - The answer here is language justice again. It has the capability to offer simultaneous translation, and we got a translation bot donated. It was the least bad of the bunch as far as we could tell. (We know about rocket.chat, but the design of their translation feature leaves a lot to be desired.)

Question - What's the difference between translation and interpretation?

Answer - Ok, nobody actually asked this one, but I'm going to answer it anyway. Interpretation is usually spoken and translation is written. That's why we had a translation bot in the chat room and simultaneous interpreters at the video conference workshops.

Question - I am a cis male. Why wasn't I invited to the FTWN-B group? How am I supposed to learn how to do better if I can't join the group?

Answer - I am a person who is invited to these groups, and it took me a long time to understand the answer to this question. The answer, as I understand it, is that it's not about you. All the other time is time when you're invited as a cis male. You could be the most feministest of feminist cis males, and still not be invited. Because for some people, you would still represent something that would make some people feel uncomfortable due to their past experiences.

Your best bet is to try to find resources in other ways. I got to just go to my local WTF group, but I hear there's a lot of books, videos, podcasts, and webcomics out there. Plus other media I'm not thinking of offhand.

I don't know what the feminism book is to answer this question, but Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? is a book that covers an analagous concept for the BIPOC group.

Question - The interpreters were practically everywhere! I hear interpreting is intense and skilled work, and this conference was already intense and I wasn't even interpreting! How can I support the interpreters and all their hard work?

Answer -

Donate to the language justice fund

Question - What happened to B!B! Mexico City?

Answer - The pandemic. Beyond that, we don't know. There is rumor they might be at the "let's talk about the next in-person Bike!Bike! workshop. UPDATE: Video of conversation at https://archive.org/details/2022.13-en

Question - Let's do a monthly single session?!

Answer - If you want to organize that, get in touch.

Preguntas y Respuestas
