History

The organization was founded in 2005 as an initiative of Community Exchange Bike School and Exchange Cycle Tours. In 2014, the organization moved into a fixed location on SE Powell Blvd, beside the current shop.

Two years later, B4H PDX started an off-site bike co-op called Chain Reaction, in partnership with Central City Concern and Give Them Bikes!. As summarized by program participant Steve S. for the Give Them Bikes! Blog:

[The Chain Reaction] program has multiple benefits, from recycling abandoned and donated bikes back into use, to building a downtown community of trained volunteers, and fostering a sense of ownership and accomplishment to program participants. The program covers bike registration and security, riding safety, and the methodology and practice of bike repair and service. And, once your basic volunteer commitment is complete, there is a fully-equipped bike shop for you to repair your new bike should any problems occur. But don’t expect many. By the time you have finished your bike, you will know what you’re doing.

2016 brought another expansion of programs, with pop-up repair programs offered in Gresham's Main City Park. In 2021, the organization began offering a program to provide free bikes to partner organizations in the community health space.

The organization operates as a chapter of Bicycles for Humanity, an international development non-profit with chapters across the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe.

Services Offered

• Our bike shop joins donors, volunteers, and adopters, to transition under-utilized bicycles back into service.
• Our financial aid process allows bicyclists of any economic status to gain access to refurbished bicycles.
• Our Volunteer Mechanics Classes train volunteers via professional instruction, curriculum, tools, and workspace to refurbish donated bicycles.
• We create and maintain co-ops with partners around Portland.
• We provide repairs at public events.
